What the Gov’t Shutdown Means for us
Unless you are not caught up on the news, you have not been able to go without hearing about the supposed “Government Shutdown”. On the news, radio and newspaper articles; everyone everywhere is panicking… or are they?
While our so-called “government” is busy bickering and crying about how to spend the imaginary money that they do not even have, they have decided to bring down their very own corrupt system, for now. The question is: What does this government shutdown mean for “us”?
There is no doubt that the government shutdown is going to have an impact on our economy. As a matter of fact, you may be feeling this impact already. Perhaps you have been furloughed for the time being, are going without a paycheck (for now) and have more time on your hands.
This brings us to the top 4 biggest concerns that the government shutdown has on us survivalists:
As mentioned already, you may have been furloughed by the shutdown. If you recall, this was one of the many Reasons to Begin Prepping that was listed some time ago. Because you may have been furloughed, it is not the same as a layoff. You will return to work as soon as the government passes a spending bill, and will be paid for the time you were out of work.
However, in the meantime, you and your family will still feel the hurt. That is, unless you have prepared.
Among the many reasons we prep, one of which is the undying threat of unemployment. It doesn’t involve guns, bullets and a lot of explosions as you act as Rambo saving your town from terrorists, but not receiving a paycheck is a very practical and real threat to our lives.
If you have been recently furloughed, or even laid off completely, there is nothing wrong with beginning to go through some of your preparations.
However, if you can avoid digging into your preps without too many money problems, that would be highly recommended.
This is a good time to at least practice using some of your preps to find any flaws in your Survival Plans.
Besides not receiving money due to possibly being furloughed, you will likely have one of the most precious commodities on this Earth: Time.
Besides resting and spending time with your family, you should use this extra time to your advantage. Begin analyzing your preparations, expanding your knowledge and increasing your skill set.
Well, now you do.
The threat of terrorism is even greater during a time of government shutdown for two reasons.
- First, to attack during such a time would be opportune because there are more people out of work and thus some services are not immediately available as they normally would.
- Second, and possibly more alarming, is the threat of furloughed employees being blackmailed and “bought” by terrorists in return for vital government secrets. This is because over 70% of the furloughed employees are U.S Intelligence employees.
In an article published by the Washington Times, Mr. Clapper, Director of National Intelligence, stated the following:
“This is a dreamland for foreign intelligence service to recruit, particularly as our employees already, many of whom were subject to furloughs driven by sequestration, are going to have, I believe, even greater financial challenges”.
This is a vital time for terrorists or other countries to begin gaining significant intelligence regarding America’s secrets. This means more potential terrorism could take place in the near future.
I write this final point as a question. The government shutdown is one thing that we have survived before. In 1995, the government shutdown not once but twice. Once in October for 5 days, and again in December for 3 weeks.
The bigger problem is not even the government shutdown or even Obamacare (right now anyway), but the Golden Date is October 17.
What happens on October 17th? That is the day that the U.S will hit the debt ceiling. Essentially, we will have run out of money and have no money to pay the bills or pay back those we have borrowed money from, such as China. It’s the same when the repo man is coming and you still have no money, but on a wider scale.
So, what will happen if the government is still shutdown and we hit the debt ceiling? Well, honestly, nobody knows for sure because it has never happened before.
Because we will no longer be able to borrow any more money, and the government will already still be shut down, one of three options will likely take place:
1. Obama orders the treasury to begin selling more bonds.
2. Obama could order the treasury to begin paying some of the bills and not others.
3. The final option is to pay nobody at all.
The problem with all of these options is that they, for the most part, seem to actually be illegal. The third options would provoke a global financial crisis and the other two would certainly hit our economy and stock market REALLY hard. Financial marketers are not going to be undisturbed by such news.
One of the largest threats of such a crisis lies with how the spending occurs during this time. There are no rules to spell out essential versus nonessential services. Officially, at least, there’s no contingency planning at all. It’s just a kind of terrifying world of uncertainty.
The government shutdown can lead to a lot of things. It can lead to furloughs, possible layoffs, you not receiving your paycheck and more. You will be left with possibly less money for now, but more time on your hands. It will weaken our national security to a degree, and trigger a potential economic crisis that could lead to essential services being cut partially or entirely.
These are uncertain times, and people are looking for something certain. The question remains: Are you prepared for the worst? The government thinks it can get away with making us slaves to their “system”.
Be safe and remember, we’re all in this together!
